Social Emotional Supports
School counselors provide social-emotional support to students in a variety of ways. Here at Okemos High School, counselors can provide:
- Individual and Family Support
- Group Counseling
- Classroom presentations
- Evening presentations
"School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools to address psychological disorders. However, school counselors are prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health crises and needs. School counselors address those barriers to student success by offering education, prevention and crisis and short-term intervention to include group counseling until the student is connected with available community resources. When students require long-term counseling or therapy, school counselors make referrals to appropriate community resources." (ASCA, 2012)
Information about each of these topics is located on our website, but if you cannot find what you are looking for, please contact your child's counselor.
E3 Mental Health Services
Okemos Public Schools has partnered with Child and Family Charities to provide a mental health clinic within Okemos High School. This opportunity is made possible because of the Expanding, Enhancing Emotional Health (E3) grant through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Adolescent Health Center Division. The clinic will provide on-site comprehensive mental health services from mild to moderate severity of need. There will be a full-time therapist at the OHS clinic five days a week and will be able to serve all OPS youth ages 5 to 21 years.
If you're interested in services for your student, please complete this referral form. If you have questions, you can reach out directly to our E3 provider, Sana Sumbal (sana.sumbal@okemosk12.net).
